Dear Reader, Important update regarding Indian Standards applicable to all existing license holders, new applicants, manufacturers, importers, and product sellers for Upholstered Composites used in Non-Domestic Furniture under the Quality Control Order, 2023.
Overview
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued the Upholstered Composites (Non-Domestic Furniture) (Quality Control) Order, 2023.
This Order applies to all upholstered composites used in non-domestic furniture as listed in the Schedule, but excludes goods meant for export.
Products must conform to Indian Standard IS XXXX:2023 and bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) under a valid BIS license as per Scheme–I of Schedule–II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
Implementation Timeline
• The Order comes into force 180 days after its publication in the Official Gazette.
Exemptions & Transitional Provision
• Export Exemption: Goods manufactured solely for export are exempt.
• Old Stock: Manufacturers/importers declaring stock made or imported before 1st January 2025 without the Standard Mark may sell such stock until 31st December 2025.
Enforcement
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the certifying and enforcing authority.
Non-compliance will invite penalties under the BIS Act, 2016.
