BIS Releases Revised Standards for LED Luminaires: What Manufacturers Need to Know Before 02 August 2026

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has come up with an important revision for the lighting industry by virtue of their Guidelines for Implementation of Revised Standards for LED Luminaires, published on 20 March 2026. The notification brings in the revised IS 10322:2026 series of standards as per the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) and replaces the old standards with the new set of technical and safety requirements. Also, BIS has set 02 August 2026 as the last date of concurrent running, which gives manufacturers an assured time window for the adoption of the revised standards.

These revised guidelines are applicable to existing BIS licence holders, new applications and the companies seeking Change in Scope of Licence (CSoL). Implementation Guidelines: Who Needs to Do What?

For Existing BIS Licensees

Licensees are required to:

Adopt the revised standard before 02 August 2026.

Submit a full test report from a BIS approved laboratory for all lead models.

Commit themselves to the effect that all other models in the series also adhere to the revised standard.

Carry out compliance activity within the specified time period.

Non-compliance may result in cancellation of the license or de-scope of models from the scope of license.

For New Applications

New applications to BIS are advised to consider:

Pending applications can proceed under the old standard.

New applications may be made under the old standard or revised standard only until 02 August 2026.

The old standard applicator shall commit to switch over to the revised standard before the date.

After 02 August 2026, BIS licenses shall be issued only on the basis of revised standards.

Change in Scope of License (CSoL)

Applicators applying for addition of new models / variants are required to follow the same provisions as for the new applicants. Application under the old standard shall be allowed till:

Switching over to revised standard, or

02 August 2026, whichever is earlier
