NOC for Steel

The steel industry in India is one of the most critical industries in the country. The industry produces a wide range of steel products, including both finished and semi-finished. The steel industry is essential to the country's economy and employs many people.

A No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ministry of Steel is required to import or export steel products. The NOC is required for customs clearance and is valid for one year.
A No Objection Certificate (NOC) is like a hall pass for steel goods with different specifications. If the steel grade/product properties don't match up with what's on the mandatory BIS list for Steel and Steel Products, the Ministry of Steel can permit the consignment to come into India.
Regarding customs clearance rules, Product codes can be a real pain, especially when they don't tell you whether or not you need to get a BIS registration. Customs officials can also be confusing, often mistaking similar products for those requiring certification. This can lead to delays in shipments and some hefty penalties.
If you want to avoid delays and penalties, you'll need to get a "No Objection Certificate" (NOC) from BIS. This certificate states that the steel product is not covered under mandatory BIS Certification. To get one of these, simply reach out to BIS and provide them with the necessary information.
The MOS (Ministry of Steel) is the apex body for formulating steel policies in India. It is responsible for the overall development of the steel industry in the country.
There are two types of requests that can be made to the MOS for clarification or exemption -
- Clarification - This type of request is made when an individual or organization is unclear about a particular policy or procedure of the MOS. The proposal is made to seek clarification from the MOS about the same.
This includes:
- Advance (For the material clarification before ordering the material)
- In Transit (For the material while it is in transit)
- Shipment at the Destination (For the material when it reaches the port)
- Exemption - This type of request is made when an individual or organization feels that they should be exempted from a specific policy or procedure of the MOS. The request is made to seek exemption from the MOS for the same.
To request clarification or exemption, the individual or organization has to submit a written request to the MOS. The request should include the reason for seeking clarification or exemption. The MOS will review the submission and decide on the same.
