5G Core Under MTCTE Certification in India: Essential Requirements (ER) Guide

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) enforces the Mandatory Testing and Certification of Telecom Equipment (MTCTE) through the list of notified telecom products, which must meet the respective applicable Essential Requirements (ERs) before they can be imported, sold, or deployed in India. 5G Core is one of the newest telecom products under the MTCTE framework and has been allocated ER Code: TEC40182606 by the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC).

As notified in MTCTE, the essential requirements for 5G Core have been made effective from 2 June 2026 and will be valid till 1 January 2050 or until they are changed by the DoT. Manufacturers, importers, OEMs and Authorised Indian Representatives (AIRs) are required to ensure compliance with these requirements prior to applying for MTCTE certification.

UMSPCS offers end-to-end support for 5G Core MTCTE certification, such as ER identification, documentation, testing coordination, portal application, and end-to-end certification assistance.

What is 5G Core?

5G Core, also known as 5GC, is the main network in a 5G mobile communication system that includes the following components: network edge, user plane, and core resources. It controls essential services like subscriber authentication, mobility management, session control, policy management, and secure communications between network elements. It is service-based and enables advanced technologies such as network slicing, IoT, and ultra-low-latency communication.

Key Essential Requirements for 5G Core

The 5G Core products have to meet the notified essential requirements by TEC to get 5G Core certification. These generally cover:

1. Functional Performance

SDependable performance of essential functions of the network.

2. Security Requirements

Security in telecommunication infrastructure and security of subscriber information.

3. Network Protocol Compliance

Compliance with applicable telecom interfaces and protocols.

4. Performance & Reliability

Attainable network performance and reliability under given conditions.

5. Regulatory Compliance

Compliance with the latest essential requirements notified by the regulators.

What is the Relevance of MTCTE Certification for Soft Switches?

The items must be compliant with MTCTE requirements, since it
  • Boosts customers’ confidence in product quality and performance.
