BIS‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Scheme-X Certification: Overview, Process, and Requirement

BIS‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Scheme-X is a program of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) designed to give a formal confirmation to products that require a conformity assessment but are not covered by the regular ISI certification (Scheme-I). The primary objective of this innovative step is to confirm that the goods comply with Indian safety, quality, and performance standards before they are allowed in the Indian market. The scheme is open to manufacturers and importers, and also to the foreign manufacturers who are required to designate an Authorized Indian Representative ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌AIR).

Types of Certification under Scheme-X

License to Use the Standard Mark

  • This type of certification is mainly for products that are continuously manufactured.
  • It‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ permits the usage of the BIS Standard Mark on the items, which is one of the ways of showing that the products meet Indian standards.

Certificate of Conformity (CoC)

  • In such cases as a single shipment, a prototype, or a small batch, it is the most suitable ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌option.
  • The CoC is limited to the specific batch or consignment for which it has been issued.

Documents Required for BIS Scheme-X Certification

The applicant is obliged to prepare a full technical dossier with detailed information about the product. Some of the most important documents are:

  • Product specifications and list of materials (BOM)
  • Engineering drawings or diagrams
  • Safety features and testing standards
  • Internal laboratory test reports
  • Quality control procedures and factory layout
  • User manuals and instructions

In the case of foreign manufacturers: Documents for the appointment of an authorized Indian representative (AIR)

BIS Scheme-X Certification Process

Application Submission

  • The application with all the required documents should be submitted online.
  • For smooth processing, complete and accurate data should be provided.

Desk Review and Examination

  • BIS goes through the technical dossier to check if it meets the necessary standards.
  • Any queries or clarifications are handled during this phase.

Factory Inspection / Onsite Assessment

  • Through the on-the-job assessment (for continuous production), BIS inspectors check whether the enterprise meets the set quality and safety standards.
  • If the manufacturers are abroad, the AIR will be the one to inspect in India, if necessary.

Grant of Certification

  • Besides the positive evaluation and the factory visit, BIS hands over the identity document, licensing the use of the standard mark or a Certificate of Conformity (CoC)
  • After receiving the certification, the product will be allowed to carry the BIS mark and be sold in the Indian marketplace.

Key Points

  • With Scheme-X, products that will be sold in India will be of good quality, safe, and reliable.
  • Foreign manufacturers should appoint an Authorized Indian Representative to fulfill the BIS requirements.
  • Correct documents, technical dossiers, and inspections are mandatory elements of the certification process.

‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍Importance of BIS Scheme-X Certification

It‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ might take a long time or be complicated to get a certificate. However, this process is very important for your business.

Here are some reasons why:

  • Helps users to be loyal to the brand: A product certified by BIS is a safe, high-quality, and reliable solution for consumers.
  • Gives security to consumers: Makes sure that a product is safe, following all the standards, and eliminates the hazards.
  • Follows the law: Work is the main factor that keeps your business far from fines and other risks. Besides that, it protects you from the trouble of being taken to court for safety and non-compliance issues of the product.
  • In short, certification is not only a requirement; it is a tool that supports your brand, customers, and business ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌reputation.
